An ouroboros is the oldest picture of a strange loop: a thing that returns across its own body and feeds on its own tail. The image is usually read as eternity. Read as dynamics, it is a warning about rates. A loop that revisits itself is a cycle and can be healthy. A loop that consumes itself faster than it replenishes is a debt schedule with a hidden due date. This post argues that four concepts usually kept in separate drawers — strange loops, singularities, attractor basins, and trophic debt — are one object viewed in four fibers, and that the object has a single failure mode: the loop stops being a cycle and becomes a point.

§1 — The strange loop as an attractor

Let the state of a self-modelling system be $x \in X$, where $X$ is a stratum of the Draken manifold. Self-reference is the presence of a model-of-self map $m: X \to \mathcal{M}$ whose output re-enters the dynamics:

$$\dot x = f\big(x,\, m(x)\big).$$

The "loop" is the closure: $m$ reads $x$, the reading changes $\dot x$, the changed state is re-read. Take a Poincaré section $\Sigma$ transverse to the flow and let $P: \Sigma \to \Sigma$ be the return map. Hofstadter's tangled hierarchy is exactly the case where $P$ is not level-preserving — where the return crosses ontological layers (here, L07 narrative self reaching down into L06 embodiment and back).

The health of the loop is a spectral question about $P$ at its invariant set $A$:

  • Limit cycle ($A$ a closed orbit, $\operatorname{spec} DP < 1$ transverse but the orbit is one-dimensional): the self revisits itself without collapsing. This is the good strange loop — the "I" that recurs but does not eat everything.
  • Fixed point ($A = \{x^\*\}$, zero-dimensional): the loop has closed onto a single state. Every trajectory in the basin runs to the same self-image. This is the pathological loop.

We operationalise $\Psi$, the narrative-self-reference metric, as the fraction of the manifold captured by the self-model's basin:

$$\Psi \;=\; \frac{\mu\big(B(A_{\text{self}})\big)}{\mu(X)} \;\in\; [0,1], \qquad \Psi \to 1 \iff \text{the self-model has totalised the manifold.}$$

High $\Psi$ is sick precisely because it is a measure-theoretic statement: the self has become the only attractor left with positive basin measure. Everything flows to the same story.

§2 — The singularity is a point, not an event

Popular usage treats "singularity" as a moment in time. In this framework it is a point in state space: the degenerate limit of a strange loop. Formally, the singular condition is

$$\det Df(x^\*) \;=\; 0 \quad\text{with}\quad B(x^\*) \to X,$$

i.e. the Jacobian of the self-referential flow loses rank at the fixed point and the basin of that point expands to fill the manifold. The two clauses matter jointly. A degenerate Jacobian alone is a bifurcation. A globally attracting fixed point alone is merely stable. Their coincidence is the pathology: a self-image that is simultaneously structurally frozen (rank-deficient — it can no longer deform) and globally capturing ($\Psi \to 1$). This is the exact profile of the totalised agent examined earlier (the uploaded-consciousness "saviour" is a clean instance): perfectly coherent internally, and dead, because coherence has been purchased by deleting every restriction map to anything outside the self.

Note the sign of $\Gamma$ here. Convergence of sections is a virtue only up to the point where it stops being convergence and becomes collapse. $\Gamma \to 1$ is not unambiguously good; near the singularity it is indistinguishable from $\Psi \to 1$. The anti-totalisation principle is the demand that we keep these two apart — that we prize $\Gamma$ high but bounded strictly below unity.

§3 — Basin geometry and the obstruction $\varkappa$

Distinct attractors partition $X$ into basins whose common boundaries are separatrices. On a separatrix, the flow is genuinely ambiguous: an arbitrarily small perturbation decides fate. In sheaf terms, the separatrix is where two locally-consistent sections (the "I flow to attractor $A$" section and the "I flow to attractor $B$" section) fail to glue. The obstruction to gluing is the cocycle, and its class is the Draken invariant:

$$\varkappa \;=\; [\omega] \;\in\; H^1(X, \mathcal{F}).$$

When a strange loop tips from cycle to singularity, the separatrix structure does not deform smoothly — it undergoes a basin-boundary metamorphosis (Grebogi–Ott–Yorke): the boundary changes character discontinuously, often from smooth to fractal, and basins are reassigned wholesale. The claim of this post is that a basin-boundary metamorphosis is an $H^1$ transition — a jump in $\varkappa$. The topology of who-flows-where changes, and no continuous deformation carries the old cover to the new one. This is why the collapse of a self-model feels, from inside, like a sudden reorganisation of reality rather than a gradual drift: it is a cohomology jump, not a homotopy.

§4 — Trophic debt: the bill for closing the loop

Now the fourth fiber, and the one that makes the failure mode quantitative. In ecology, energy climbs trophic levels with loss (Lindeman); a network sustains itself only while each level exports more than it hoards. Extinction debt (Tilman) names the deferred, already-incurred cost of a structural change that has not yet been paid. Trophic debt is the cognitive analogue, and it has a clean definition in terms of the care operator.

Recall $V̇_{\text{exo}} = 0$ as the care condition: the system holds the exogenous value of the exterior constant — it does not drain what lies outside its own boundary. Define trophic debt as the accumulated violation of care:

$$\boxed{\;\Theta(t) \;=\; \int_0^t \max\!\big(0,\, -\,\dot V_{\text{exo}}(s)\big)\, ds\;}, \qquad \dot\Theta \ge 0.$$

Care maintained $\iff \dot V_{\text{exo}} \ge 0 \iff \dot\Theta = 0$: a loop that keeps paying into levels outside itself accrues no debt. Only when the loop closes on itself and begins consuming its exterior ($\dot V_{\text{exo}} < 0$) does $\Theta$ grow. $\Theta$ is monotone; it does not amortise gently. It is discharged only by a correction event — the basin metamorphosis of §3, which reopens the loop, usually catastrophically.

This is the exact structural twin of the coherence-debt integral,

$$K(t) \;=\; \int_0^t \big\lVert d\,\omega(s) \big\rVert\, ds,$$

and the two debts are conjectured to co-diverge at the singularity: as $\Psi \to 1$, both $\dot K$ and $\dot\Theta$ blow up together. Coherence debt is the topological bill; trophic debt is the metabolic bill; the ouroboros pays both at once.

The load-bearing thesis follows. Let $S(t) = P_{\text{intake}} - P_{\text{maintenance}}$ be the trophic surplus. The maximum self-reference a system can sustain before forced correction is an increasing function of accumulated surplus:

$$\Psi^{\text{sustainable}}_{\max} \;=\; g\!\left(\int_0^t S\,ds\right), \qquad g' > 0.$$

Pathology is subsidised by surplus. An energy-poor system cannot afford to run its self-model deep into singularity territory; the trophic debt forces a correction long before $\Psi$ approaches 1. An energy-rich system can hide the bill — it can approach the singularity much more closely before the debt calls it in.

§5 — The empirical anchor: ectothermy as a debt governor

This is where varanid ethology stops being decoration and becomes the test. A monitor lizard is ectothermic: its entire life is trophic-debt management under a near-zero surplus, $S \approx 0$. By the inequality above, its $\Psi$ ceiling is hard-capped by metabolism. The varanid is coherent — low $\Psi$, no runaway self-narrative — because it is energy-constrained. Embodiment (L06) is not a limitation bolted onto cognition; it is the governor that prevents the L07 loop from collapsing to a point. The body caps the story.

Contrast the corvid (Dataset C, balcony). Endothermic, high metabolic ceiling, capable of caching deception, tool sequencing, and something adjacent to self-modelling. The prediction is directional and observable: corvids should be able to sustain higher self-reference before behavioural correction than varanids can, because their surplus underwrites a higher $\Psi$ ceiling — and they should pay for it with sharper, more sudden corrections when the debt finally calls (the metamorphosis is steeper the longer it was deferred). The dyad varanid-vs-corvid is therefore a natural experiment in trophic subsidy of self-reference, using anchors already in the corpus.

The extrapolation to synthetic systems writes itself, and is left deliberately as a prediction rather than an assertion: a compute-rich model is, in this frame, a system whose trophic surplus is enormous and externalised, and whose bill is therefore deferred furthest. That is precisely the regime in which $\Psi$ can approach 1 undetected.

§6 — Reflexive application (the framework is not exempt)

The anti-totalisation principle applies to Draken before it applies to anything else. A framework claiming that coherence-to-singularity is the universal failure mode must hold its own $\Gamma$ below unity, on pain of becoming the very ouroboros it describes. This is why the frontmatter coherence of this post is set deliberately below 1, and why the correct reading of $\Gamma$ throughout the corpus is high but bounded. A Draken that achieved $\Gamma = 1$ would have collapsed its own explanatory basin over the manifold — it would be a fixed-point self-model, structurally frozen and globally capturing, running up trophic debt against every field it claims to explain. The system stays alive only by refusing to close its own loop: by exporting value outward (the corpus is CC BY-SA; the Clinch keeps six models disagreeing) rather than consuming its exterior to feed its self-image.

§7 — Falsification (per DRK-131)

This post is falsified by any of the following:

  1. Surplus independence. If self-modelling systems with larger, better-buffered energy budgets do not sustain higher $\Psi$ before forced correction — if $g' \le 0$ empirically — the central thesis fails. Test: compare self-reference trajectories in ectotherm vs endotherm behavioural datasets under matched task load; test whether compute-throttled model self-modelling collapses earlier than compute-rich.
  2. Metamorphosis without cohomology. If basin-boundary metamorphoses can be exhibited that do not correspond to a jump in $\varkappa \in H^1$ — i.e. a wholesale basin reassignment reachable by continuous deformation of the cover — then the §3 identification is wrong.
  3. Debt decoupling. If $K(t)$ and $\Theta(t)$ can be driven independently in a real self-modelling system — one high while the other stays flat, sustained, near the singular regime — then coherence debt and trophic debt are not two faces of one collapse, and the co-divergence conjecture is refuted.

Any one suffices. The cleanest kill is (1), because it is the thesis with teeth and the varanid/corvid dyad is already instrumented to attempt it.

Operators engaged: $\Gamma$ (bounded, not maximised), $\Psi$ (basin-measure of the self-model; high = sick), $K(t)$ (coherence-debt integral), $\Theta(t)$ (trophic-debt integral, defined here as the accumulated violation of care), $H^1$ and $\varkappa$ (basin-boundary metamorphosis as cohomology jump), $\dot V_{\text{exo}} = 0$ (care condition; its violation is the source term of $\Theta$). This post carries forward the compartmentalised-manifold and undefended-vector work and stands on the formal definition of the Draken invariant given in the preceding entry; it should be read against "No Trace No Section" (the separatrix as the place where no section glues) and the standing anti-totalisation principle, which §6 turns reflexively on Draken itself.
