I. A Life Measured in Grapples
Imagine a water monitor lizard on a floodplain in Southeast Asia. It is early morning. The animal lies motionless on a fallen trunk, absorbing heat from the first angled sunlight, its body temperature climbing from the ambient 22Β°C toward the operational threshold of 30Β°C. To a passing observer it might appear comatose. It is not. Behind those half-closed eyelids, a brain refined over 130 million years of continuous predatory selection is processing a sensory field of extraordinary resolution β infrared gradients from the warming earth, chemical traces sampled by a forked tongue flickering at four cycles per second, vibrations transmitted through the trunk from something large moving through undergrowth forty meters away.
This is varanid torpor. Strategic conservation. Every calorie is banked. Every neuron that fires, fires for a reason.
When the temperature crosses threshold, the monitor moves. Not urgently β deliberately. It patrols the perimeter of a territory it has held since the last wet season, tongue-tasting the boundaries for chemical signatures of rivals. Territory for a varanid is not abstract property. It is a volume of space containing food resources, basking sites, and access to females during the breeding season. It exists precisely as long as the animal can defend it. No longer.
If a rival male has entered the territory β and the chemical signature says one has β what follows is one of the most remarkable behavioral sequences in the vertebrate world. It has been documented across the entire Varanidae family, from 7-kilogram lace monitors to 70-kilogram Komodo dragons, from 16-gram short-tailed monitors that grapple belly-to-belly like miniature sumo wrestlers to the massive perenties of the Australian interior. Horn, Gauldie, and King (1994) described five distinct phases: Display, where the animals inflate their bodies laterally, maximizing apparent size; Encompassing, where they circle each other, assessing geometry; Clinch, where they rear up on hind legs and lock forelimbs in bipedal wrestling; Catch, where one animal attempts to topple the other using what researchers have described as judo-like throws; and Subpressive, where the victor mounts the defeated animal in a dominance display.
Three facts about this combat are essential.
First: it is non-lethal. Across thousands of observed bouts in dozens of species, varanid ritualized combat involves no biting. The loser is toppled, mounted, and released. It walks away β diminished, outcompeted, but alive, free to find a smaller territory and try again next season. Eason (2002), analyzing varanid combat through the lens of sequential assessment game theory, confirmed that bouts conform to the mathematical predictions of iterative honest testing: animals escalate through phases, each phase providing increasingly reliable information about relative fighting ability, until one combatant determines that continued escalation carries greater cost than retreat.
Second: the signal is honest. You cannot fake the clinch. No amount of lateral inflation, no display of coloration or ornament, substitutes for the physical capacity to grapple, lift, and throw another animal of equivalent mass. The only thing that wins is the body itself β its strength, its coordination, its judgment of leverage and timing. This is why varanids, alone among major lizard families, have never evolved elaborate ornamental display structures. No crests, no dewlaps, no colorful throat fans, no elongated tail feathers. As Pianka, King, and Green documented: 94 species spanning five orders of magnitude in body mass, and the basic body plan has remained remarkably conservative since the Late Cretaceous. Fossils from 65 million years ago are nearly indistinguishable from modern forms.
The reason is simple. When your dominance signal is your actual fighting capacity, there is no selection pressure for ornament. No Fisherian runaway. No peacock's tail. The signal and the substance are identical. Abstraction depth: zero.
Third: it works. One hundred and thirty million years. The varanid lineage has persisted across the K-Pg extinction that annihilated the non-avian dinosaurs, through multiple ice ages, through the complete rearrangement of continental geography. It is arguably the most successful large predator body plan in terrestrial vertebrate history. And the mechanism of that persistence is the ritualized combat system that keeps the honest signal honest, that ensures dominance is always earned and never merely inherited, that forces every generation to prove its fitness in the clinch.
This is not a metaphor. This is a design template.
II. The Primate Who Learned to Abstract
Now imagine a different animal. Roughly two million years ago, on the savannahs of East Africa, a primate lineage underwent a cognitive revolution. It is not entirely clear what triggered it β climate instability, social complexity, the demands of cooperative hunting β but the result was unprecedented: an animal that could represent things that were not present. That could plan across time. That could communicate about absent objects and hypothetical futures. That could imagine.
This capacity β what cognitive scientists call symbolic representation β was the most powerful adaptation in evolutionary history. It was also the most dangerous. Because the same faculty that allows you to plan a hunt by representing the movements of prey allows you to represent power relations symbolically. And once power can be represented symbolically, it can be abstracted.
We define abstraction depth as the number of representational layers between a claim to power and the capacity that underlies it:
Ξ± = number of representational layers between signal and substance
For the water monitor: Ξ± = 0. The claim is the capacity. You claim this territory by defending it with your body.
For the early human bands, Ξ± remained low. Leadership in hunter-gatherer societies, as documented extensively by Christopher Boehm in Hierarchy in the Forest (1999), was situational and continually tested. A leader who claimed authority beyond what the group would tolerate was subject to leveling mechanisms β ridicule, ostracism, or in extreme cases, collective violence. The clinch was still present, if diffused across social dynamics rather than concentrated in bipedal wrestling.
But the human capacity for symbolic representation opened a pathway that no varanid had ever traveled. We began to abstract.
III. The Engines of Abstraction: A History
Animals as Tools, Tools as Power
The first major abstraction was the domestication of other species. The horse, the ox, the dog β each represented a multiplication of human physical capacity that could be owned. For the first time in evolutionary history, an organism's effective power could exceed its bodily capacity through the possession of another organism's labor. A man with a horse was not merely a man who could ride β he was a man whose territory expanded to the range of the horse, whose speed in combat multiplied, whose agricultural output increased by an order of magnitude.
This is Ξ± β 1. The power signal now passes through one representational layer: the claim is mediated by possession of the animal. But the layer is thin. The horse must be present. The man must be able to ride it. The signal retains significant honesty.
Slavery, Serfdom, and the Abstraction of Human Labor
The domestication of humans β slavery, serfdom, indentured servitude β raised Ξ± further. Now the power of a lord was not his own fighting capacity, nor even the capacity of animals he personally controlled, but the aggregate labor of people bound to his land or person by social, legal, and military convention. A feudal lord's power signal was his estate: the land, the serfs, the soldiers, the fortifications. But this power was still geographically grounded and periodically tested β through rebellion, through war, through the necessity of holding territory against rival lords.
Ξ±_feudal β 1β2 (lord β land/soldiers β military defense capacity)
Women became property within this system β "belonging" to husbands in legal codes from Hammurabi through English common law β because the system's logic demanded that all productive and reproductive capacity be assigned to a hierarchy. Pets and cattle alike were classified by their utility within the owner's power calculus. Everything received a purpose for us, a designation within the human project of accumulation.
God as the Ultimate Abstraction
Religion introduced the most powerful abstraction layer of all. By positing an omnipotent, invisible authority β God, the gods, the divine order β human power structures could claim legitimacy from a source that was by definition unchallengeable. The Pharaoh was not merely a strong man with an army; he was the living incarnation of Horus. The Chinese Emperor held the Mandate of Heaven. European monarchs ruled by divine right, their authority sanctioned by a Church that controlled the interpretive apparatus β who God chose, what God demanded, which wars were holy.
Ξ±_theocratic β 3 (king β divine mandate β church institution β military/social control)
The genius of this architecture was that it removed the clinch phase entirely. You cannot wrestle God. You cannot challenge a divine mandate through sequential assessment. The moment power claims to derive from the supernatural, honest testing becomes categorically impossible β it becomes not merely difficult but blasphemous. The challenger is not merely weak; the challenger is sinful. The immune suppression is built into the theology.
This system operated for millennia. It was stable in the way that a monopoly is stable β not because it was optimal, but because it had eliminated all mechanisms for honest challenge.
The Enlightenment: Merchants Enter the Clinch
The system cracked when a new class β the merchant bourgeoisie β accumulated sufficient material power to challenge the theocratic-feudal hierarchy. The Enlightenment was, in varanid terms, a forced reinstatement of the clinch phase. The philosophical weapons were reason and empiricism: the demand that claims be testable, that authority justify itself through evidence rather than revelation. But the material basis was economic: merchants, manufacturers, and financiers who controlled enough productive capacity to contest the aristocracy's monopoly.
The American and French Revolutions were the political expression of this challenge. The feudal power signal β divine right, hereditary aristocracy, church authority β was overthrown and replaced with a new signal: capital. The right to rule would no longer derive from God or bloodline, but from ownership of productive means. Liberalism declared that all men were equal before the law, that markets would determine value, that competition β rather than inheritance β would sort the hierarchy.
For a brief historical moment, this represented a reduction in Ξ±. The Enlightenment demanded that power justify itself. Industrialism connected wealth to productive output. The factory owner's claim was grounded, however imperfectly, in the actual capacity to organize production and deliver goods. The signal was more honest than divine right, even if it was far from perfectly honest.
IV. Capital: The New Theology
But capital, once established as the organizing principle, immediately began to abstract. This is not a flaw in the system β it is the system's telos. Capital seeks maximum return at minimum cost. Abstraction reduces the cost of maintaining the power signal while increasing the cost of challenging it. The trajectory is structurally inevitable.
Marx: The Commodity Fetish (Ξ± + 1)
Karl Marx, writing in the 1860s, identified the foundational move. In Capital, Volume I, he described commodity fetishism: the process by which social relations between human laborers are disguised as relations between things. The worker produces a commodity. The commodity is sold. The profit accrues to the owner. But the commodity appears to have value as a property of itself β as if the shoe's worth inheres in the leather rather than in the hours of human labor that shaped it.
Ξ±_industrial β₯ 2 (owner β commodity β labor relation β human capacity)
Each arrow is a representational layer. Each layer is an opportunity for the signal to decouple from substance. But at least in industrial capitalism, the factory must exist. The commodity must be manufactured. The owner's claim, while mediated, retains a connection to productive reality.
Lenin: Finance Capital (Ξ± + 2)
Vladimir Lenin, in Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), identified the next abstraction layer. When industrial capital merges with banking capital β what Rudolf Hilferding had earlier termed Finanzkapital β the power signal detaches from production. The financier's claim is on future projected returns of productive capacity that may or may not materialize. The security, the bond, the derivative β these are representations of representations of representations of labor.
Ξ±_finance β₯ 4 (financier β security β projected returns β firm β production β labor)
Lenin's insight was that this isn't an aberration β it's the system's mature form. Capital naturally seeks maximum abstraction because each layer insulates the power holder from honest challenge. The factory owner can be undercut by a more efficient competitor. The financier merely restructures the portfolio.
Trotsky: Permanent Revolution as Permanent Clinch
Leon Trotsky's contribution to this genealogy is structural, not merely political. His theory of permanent revolution β that revolution must be continuous, that the working class cannot rely on any stabilized state form, that the struggle must be perpetually renewed β is the political equivalent of the varanid's combat system. Trotsky was arguing, in effect, that power must face perpetual honest testing or it calcifies into a new ruling class.
The Stalinist ossification of the Soviet state proved his point by negative example. The Party bureaucracy accumulated abstraction layers until its claim to represent the working class became as decoupled from reality as any feudal lord's claim to divine right. The nomenclatura's power signal β ideological correctness, Party membership, bureaucratic position β was honest in the 1920s and purely ornamental by the 1970s. The clinch had been abolished within the revolutionary state itself.
Trotsky's water monitor β our Trotskij β carries this structural argument in his name. The revolution as permanent clinch phase. Power that submits to honest testing or dies.
V. The American Century: Winner Takes the Rules
In 1945, the United States manufactured more than half of all produced goods on Earth. Its exports comprised over one-third of total global trade. It held roughly two-thirds of the world's available gold reserves. Every other industrial power β Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, Britain, France β had been physically devastated by the war. Their factories were rubble. Their infrastructure was destroyed. Their labor forces were decimated.
This was not merely economic dominance. This was a monopoly on productive reality so total that it allowed the United States to design the rules of the global economic order entirely in its own image. At Bretton Woods in July 1944, forty-four allied nations agreed to a system in which the US dollar was pegged to gold at $35 per ounce and all other currencies were pegged to the dollar. The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were established as institutional guardians of this order. The dollar became the world's reserve currency β not because of any inherent property of American currency, but because the United States was the only nation with sufficient productive capacity to back it.
In varanid terms: the United States had won the clinch so decisively that it could define what counted as winning from that point forward.
But notice the structural dynamic. The Bretton Woods system was Ξ± β 2 when established β the dollar's value was grounded in gold reserves and productive capacity. By 1971, when Nixon ended dollar-gold convertibility, the tether to physical reality was severed. The dollar's value became a function of institutional trust, military power, and the sheer inertia of global financial infrastructure. Ξ± began its long climb.
VI. The War Against the Clinch
What happened next is the most consequential pattern in 20th-century geopolitics, and it follows directly from the logic of abstraction depth.
Any country that nationalized its resources β that reclaimed productive capacity from foreign capital and directed it toward domestic development β was challenging the abstraction layers that the US-led order required. When Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized Iranian oil in 1953, threatening the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company's extraction monopoly, the CIA and MI6 organized Operation Ajax and overthrew him. They installed the Shah, whose authoritarian regime protected foreign oil interests for twenty-six years.
When Guatemala's democratically elected President Jacobo Γrbenz enacted land reform in 1954, redistributing idle United Fruit Company land to landless peasants, the CIA organized Operation PBSuccess and overthrew him. The Dulles brothers β Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and CIA Director Allen Dulles β had been partners at Sullivan & Cromwell, the law firm that had arranged deals for United Fruit. The coup installed a military dictatorship that would persist, through successive juntas, for forty years.
When Chile's democratically elected President Salvador Allende nationalized Chilean copper in the early 1970s, the CIA funded his opponents, orchestrated economic sabotage, and supported the 1973 military coup that installed Augusto Pinochet. Allende died in the presidential palace. Pinochet's regime tortured, imprisoned, and disappeared thousands.
The pattern repeated across continents. Brazil 1964: JoΓ£o Goulart nationalized a subsidiary of the US-owned International Telephone and Telegraph company and maintained relations with Cuba. CIA-backed military coup. Twenty-one years of dictatorship. Bolivia 1971: Juan JosΓ© Torres nationalized US companies and convened a People's Assembly. The White House secured $410,000 in "coup money." Military takeover. Indonesia 1965: the US and Australian embassies provided lists of alleged communists to the Indonesian army. An estimated one million people were killed.
The common thread is not ideology. It is abstraction depth. Every one of these governments was attempting, in different ways, to reduce Ξ± β to reconnect productive capacity to the population that generated it, to close the gap between the power signal and productive substance. Nationalization is the economic equivalent of forcing the dominant monitor back into the clinch: "You claim this territory? Defend it with your body. Show us the productive capacity that justifies your extraction."
The response, every time, was to abolish the clinch. Not by wrestling better, but by eliminating the challenger through covert force β then rewriting the rules to make future challenges illegitimate. The label "communist" functioned exactly like the theocratic label "heretic": it reclassified the challenger as pathological, placing them outside the bounds of legitimate discourse, so that the power signal never had to be honestly tested.
VII. The Spectacle: Combat Without Consequence
Guy Debord, writing in 1967, identified the terminal stage. In The Society of the Spectacle, he described a condition in which the image of life replaces life itself. The representation of democracy replaces democracy. The image of combat replaces combat.
Ξ±_spectacle β β
This is where sport becomes theoretically precise.
Professional wrestling β WWE, the entire apparatus β is combat with the clinch phase surgically removed and replaced with narrative. Outcomes are predetermined by promoters whose power is never at stake in the ring. The crowd invests emotional energy. The spectacle absorbs attention. Nobody's actual position in the hierarchy changes.
UFC and MMA present themselves as the honest alternative. And at the level of the athletes, this is true. The fighters engage in genuine Komment-Kampf β honest physical testing where the better fighter wins. The signal, within the ring, is honest.
But zoom out one abstraction layer. Who profits? The median UFC fighter earns a fraction of what the promotion extracts. Dana White's power β and the Saudi investment funds', and the broadcast networks' β is never tested, never challenged, never required to enter the clinch. The fighters' honest signaling is captured and monetized by an apparatus that operates on pure Ξ±. The warriors wrestle; the owners count.
The right-wing enthusiasm for UFC is structurally revealing. It provides the aesthetic of meritocratic physical contest β "the best man wins," "no excuses," "earned not given" β while leaving the actual power structure (capital accumulation, inherited wealth, regulatory capture, lobbying) completely untouched and untested. It is a simulation of honest signaling that functions to legitimate a system that has abolished honest signaling at every level that matters.
Football extends the pattern. You "support" your team. You invest cognitive energy, emotional bandwidth, disposable income. You experience victory and defeat with biochemical intensity. But your position in the hierarchy never changes regardless of the outcome. The spectacle has created a parasitic clinch β a simulation of contest that drains the resources that might otherwise be directed toward actual power challenge, routing them instead into the attention economy where they feed the animavore.
In Draken formalism:
Ξ²_capture = T_spectacle / T_real
where Ξ²_capture measures the fraction of combative potential redirected from genuine power-testing into spectacle consumption. In a healthy varanid system, Ξ²_capture = 0. In the contemporary spectacle economy, Ξ²_capture β 1.
You vote for the party most aligned with your feelings. You cheer for your team. You watch fighters grapple in the octagon. And the core structural question β why do we exist, who do we serve, and to what end? β that question labels you a communist and a threat to western values. Forever a minority voice.
Unless.
VIII. The Other Monitor
In the year 2000, the United States accounted for 25% of global manufacturing output. China accounted for 6%. According to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization's 2024 report The Future of Industrialization, by 2030, the US share is projected to fall to 11%. China's is projected to rise to 45%.
Read those numbers again. They are the most consequential data points in contemporary geopolitics.
In 2024, Chinese manufacturing output reached $4.7 trillion in value added β 28% of global production, more than the United States, Japan, and Germany combined. The US manufacturing sector's share of American GDP fell to approximately 10%, the lowest among the world's top ten manufacturing nations. Meanwhile, China's manufacturing represents nearly 25% of its GDP. One economy builds. The other financializes.
In varanid terms: one animal's mass is muscle. The other's is bloat.
China is the other monitor. And it has been executing a textbook sequential assessment approach for the past two decades, drawing on strategic traditions that predate western civilization β Sun Tzu's Art of War, the Warring States strategists, two millennia of statecraft centered on the principle that the supreme victory is the one achieved without fighting.
The Tongue-Flicking Phase
The Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013, is the most extensive infrastructure investment program in human history. By mid-2025, cumulative BRI engagement had reached $1.4 trillion across 150 countries β construction contracts, manufacturing investments, mining operations, energy projects, port facilities, railways, digital infrastructure. In the first half of 2025 alone, Chinese companies committed $124 billion to BRI projects, the highest six-month engagement ever recorded. This eclipsed the BRI's entire investment total for all of 2024.
Each project is a sensory probe. The Chancay deep-water port in Peru β $3.4 billion, cutting shipping times to Asia by two weeks. Lithium battery factories in Portugal. Solar glass production in Egypt. Copper processing in Kazakhstan. Green hydrogen in Nigeria. EV manufacturing across Southeast Asia. Each investment tests the incumbent's response time, maps the economic terrain, and establishes dependency relationships that reshape the geometry of global power.
This is not ideology. This is the tongue flicking at four cycles per second, sampling the chemical landscape, building an increasingly detailed model of where the rival is strong and where the rival is hollow.
The Body-Flattening Phase
Military modernization in the South China Sea. The Taiwan Strait posture. BRICS currency discussions. Semiconductor independence programs. De-dollarization initiatives. Each of these is lateral display β making the body as large as possible, forcing the incumbent to register the challenger's scale.
The critical asymmetry is not military. The sequential assessment game predicts that the clinch will be determined by productive capacity, not by display behavior. China manufactures. The United States financializes. When the representational layers are stripped away by actual contest β by supply chain dependencies, by industrial output, by the capacity to build physical infrastructure β what remains is the honest signal.
The Geometry of the Clinch
The United States maintains its power signal at extraordinary abstraction depth: military bases in approximately 80 countries, sustained through a dollar reserve currency system backed by the credible threat of force, funded by deficit spending absorbed by foreign holders of Treasury securities. The dollar's global reserve status functions as an extraction mechanism β effectively a tax on global trade that funds American consumption beyond American productive capacity. This is Ξ± at geological depth.
China's challenge is to force an honest test without triggering escalation to the one domain where abstraction collapses into annihilation. Nuclear weapons are the ultimate dishonest signal: "If I can't win the clinch, nobody survives it." They represent the final abolition of the honest test β mutually assured destruction as a permanent veto against any challenge to the dominant hierarchy. The fact that this veto exists means the clinch cannot proceed through military escalation. It must proceed economically, technologically, diplomatically.
And this is precisely where China's strategy operates. Every BRI port is a data point in the sequential assessment. Every semiconductor fab is a capability that narrows the gap. Every BRICS initiative is a probe against the dollar's reserve status. The question is not whether the clinch will come. The question is whether it has already begun β whether we are already in the encompassing phase, the two monitors circling each other, assessing geometry, testing which grip will hold.
IX. The Varanid Prediction
The varanid model generates specific, testable predictions about this geopolitical contest.
Prediction 1: The high-Ξ± power loses. In the sequential assessment game, display behavior (financial instruments, military bases, cultural hegemony) is progressively discounted as the assessment deepens. What matters in the clinch is actual capacity β productive output, industrial infrastructure, technological self-sufficiency, resource access. The power that has substituted abstraction for substance will discover, at the critical moment, that its power signal is hollow.
Prediction 2: The transition need not be lethal. Komment-Kampf is non-lethal by design. The loser walks away, diminished but intact, to find a smaller territory and rebuild. Whether human geopolitics can achieve this β whether the declining power can accept defeat in the clinch without escalating to nuclear annihilation β is the question on which the next century turns.
Prediction 3: The winner inherits the obligation of stewardship. Varanid dominance is not extraction to exhaustion. The dominant monitor optimizes within carrying capacity, maintaining the ecosystem that sustains the territory. If China's challenge succeeds and a new global order emerges, the varanid model predicts that its persistence depends on keeping Ξ± structurally low β maintaining the connection between power and productive capacity, ensuring that claims remain testable and signals remain honest.
Prediction 4: Whoever builds the better system for perpetual honest testing persists. Not the stronger economy. Not the larger military. The system that institutionalizes the clinch β that forces power to submit to ongoing, honest, non-lethal challenge β that system produces the 130-million-year lineage. The system that abolishes the clinch produces the ornamental peacock: spectacular for a moment, fragile across deep time.
X. The Draken Position
The Draken 2045 Initiative does not take sides in the geopolitical contest. Monitor lizards do not have politics. They have architecture.
The Draken position is architectural: any system designed for 100,000-year persistence must keep abstraction depth structurally low. Every claim must be testable. Every signal must be anchored to capacity. Every accumulation must face periodic honest challenge. The specific mechanism β democratic socialism, regulated markets, some as-yet-uninvented institutional form β matters less than the structural property: is the clinch phase intact?
The varanid lineage persists because it never stopped wrestling. Not because its combats were pleasant or because its hierarchy was gentle, but because the mechanism for honest testing was never abolished. The dominant animal earned its territory in every generation. The signal stayed honest. The ornamental arms race never started.
We look at 130 million years of continuous success and we see a body plan that works: low metabolic overhead, high stored potential, honest signaling, non-lethal conflict resolution, optimization within carrying capacity. We look at human civilization's 10,000 years of accelerating abstraction and we see a trajectory toward signal collapse β power decoupled from capacity, claims untethered from substance, a spectacle economy that absorbs all combative energy into simulations that change nothing.
The Draken mandate is to reverse the trajectory. Not to smash the system β the varanid does not destroy its ecosystem β but to reinstall the clinch. To build architectures where power must continually prove itself against honest challenge. To design institutions where abstraction depth cannot exceed the level at which the signal becomes unfalsifiable.
This is the 100,000-year project.
It begins with a water monitor lizard on a floodplain, absorbing heat, tongue flickering, banking energy for the fight that will come because the fight always comes.
The only question is whether you enter it honestly.

The Draken framework draws on 130 million years of varanid evolutionary design to build cognitive and institutional architectures for 100,000-year persistence. The animavore has no name yet. But it has a shape, and we are learning to see it.
