§0 Correction at the gate

The working hypothesis for this post was that human moral disgust runs on the vomeronasal pathway, the same circuitry as Jacobson's organ in reptiles and other mammals. Under DRK-131 load-first, that hypothesis fails and is stated here as failed.

Adult humans have no functional vomeronasal system. A vomeronasal pit or duct is found in many adults (Trotier et al. 2000), but it carries no demonstrated sensory neurons connected to the brain. A systematic search found no organized accessory olfactory bulb in the adult human (Meisami et al. 1998), which is where vomeronasal input would terminate. At the molecular level, TRPC2, the ion channel on which vomeronasal signal transduction depends in rodents, became a pseudogene in the catarrhine lineage, the Old World monkeys and apes, roughly at the time trichromatic colour vision arose (Liman & Innan 2003; Zhang & Webb 2003).

The minority position deserves its hearing. Berliner, Monti-Bloch and colleagues reported electrical responses from the human VNO, and changes in luteinizing-hormone pulsatility in men, after a synthetic steroid was delivered into it (Berliner et al. 1996). Those findings came largely from one group with commercial ties to the compounds tested and have not been independently replicated with a demonstrated neural projection. Meredith's (2001) critical review concluded that the question of human VNO function remains open and should be separated from the question of human chemical communication, which does occur.

So the claim "same circuitry" is false as established anatomy. What survives is stronger and stranger: humans kept the pit and lost the wire. The gate that evaluates the chemical identity of the other was cut from the brain, and the function it served was rebuilt elsewhere. The rest of this post follows where it was rebuilt.

§1 The organ of the other

In squamates the vomeronasal system is the principal channel for reading conspecifics and prey. The tongue collects non-volatile molecules and delivers them to the vomeronasal organ in the roof of the mouth. Schwenk (1994) argued that the fork itself is an instrument: two tines sample two points at once, which lets the animal detect the direction of a chemical trail. A monitor lizard's tongue-flick is therefore not tasting in the everyday sense. It is an intake restriction morphism aimed at who and where, not at what food.

Formally, let the vomeronasal channel be a restriction map

$$\rho_{VN} : \mathcal{F}(\text{environment}) \to \mathcal{F}(\text{conspecific identity}),$$

projecting the chemical field onto the stalk that carries kin, rival, mate, sick, and stranger. This is the Inpu gate of DRK-155 with the jackal's nose replaced by a forked tongue.

§2 Where disgust actually lives

Human disgust has a different address. The best-supported account treats it as an elaboration of distaste, a food-rejection system built on the gustatory and oral apparatus (Rozin, Haidt & McCauley 2008). Chapman et al. (2009) found that the facial muscle activity of oral distaste (levator labii, the upper-lip raise) also appears in response to disgusting images and to unfair treatment in an economic game. Wicker et al. (2003) showed that the anterior insula activates both when a person smells something disgusting and when they watch someone else's disgusted face.

The functional reading is the behavioural immune system (Schaller & Park 2011): a pre-emptive avoidance of pathogens that fires on cues rather than on confirmed infection, and therefore fires on false positives. Tybur, Lieberman & Griskevicius (2009) separate three domains, pathogen, sexual, and moral disgust, with different adaptive rationales.

The main olfactory system does feed this. Body odour, rot and faeces are olfactory cues and elicit disgust strongly. So the chemical judgment of the other did not vanish with the vomeronasal organ. It moved: part into the main olfactory channel, part into the oral-gustatory rejection reflex, and part into the insula's integration of both with social perception.

$$\rho_{VN} \;\longmapsto\; \rho_{ins} = \rho_{olf} \circ \rho_{oral}$$

The replacement gate has a known defect. It was built to reject food, and it is now asked to evaluate people.

§3 From yuck to wrong: the political gradient

This is the critical angle, and it holds, but on the main olfactory and oral routes rather than the vomeronasal one.

Inbar, Pizarro & Bloom (2009) found that dispositional disgust sensitivity predicts political conservatism, most strongly on purity-related issues. In a companion study, Inbar, Pizarro, Knobe & Bloom (2009) used exactly the case that sharpens the question: participants read that an agent's action had the side effect of causing gay men to kiss in public. The more disgust-sensitive the participant, the more they judged the agent to have intended it, a known marker of implicit moral disapproval, even though most did not explicitly call it wrong. The effect did not appear for heterosexual kissing. A second study found the same pattern on an Implicit Association Test.

The chemosensory link is carried by body odour, not pheromones. A Stockholm University group (Liuzza et al. 2018) showed that body odour disgust sensitivity (BODS) predicts authoritarian attitudes across two studies, and in a third that authoritarianism fully mediated the association between BODS and support for Donald Trump. A later preregistered study across nine countries linked BODS to xenophobia (Zakrzewska et al. 2023). At the neural level, Ahn et al. (2014) reported that brain responses to non-political disgusting images predicted political ideology.

So the organ is wrong but the gradient is real: sensitivity to contamination cues, including the smell of other bodies, tracks harsher judgment of out-groups and of sexual minorities. That is the behavioural immune system (§2) reaching into politics.

The moral extension of disgust is where the post's original intuition does land. People describe acts they consider wrong in the vocabulary of contamination: filthy, rotten, sick, tainted. Pathogen avoidance generalizes readily to norm-violators, because the behavioural immune system treats the unfamiliar and the transgressive as potential carriers.

Caution is required here. The stronger claim, that incidental disgust (a bad smell in the room) makes moral judgments harsher, has not held up well. Landy & Goodwin (2015) meta-analysed the experimental literature and found a small effect that shrinks toward zero once publication bias is corrected. The robust finding is that disgust and moral condemnation co-occur and share vocabulary; the causal arrow from sensory disgust to moral verdict is weak.

In Draken terms, the carrier is contamination language and the cargo is a claim of wrongness. The carrier is authentic, a real reflex, but its index to the cargo is unreliable. That places moral disgust in the four-pole taxonomy as an authentic carrier with an unverified index.

§4 Jacob, heel-grabber and forger of smell

The name of the organ runs straight into Genesis. Ludwig Levin Jacobson described the organ in 1813; the name Jacob, Ya'akov, is explained in Genesis 25:26 through 'aqev, heel, because he was born grasping his brother's heel.

The narrative that follows is a chemosensory deception. In Genesis 27, the blind Isaac must identify which son stands before him. Rebekah dresses Jacob in Esau's garments and covers his hands and neck with goatskin. Isaac touches him and says the voice is Jacob's but the hands are Esau's. Then he smells the garments, recognizes "the smell of my son" as the smell of a field, and gives the blessing.

This is the vomeronasal problem stated as story. Identity is checked through touch and smell because sight is unavailable. The check is passed by a synthetic carrier with a false index: borrowed odour and borrowed skin delivering a forged identity. The patriarchal blessing, the founding transfer of the Abrahamic line, is obtained by spoofing the organ that verifies the other.

§5 The ladder and the clinch

Jacob then receives two images that pull in opposite directions.

The ladder (Genesis 28). At Bethel, Jacob dreams of a stairway set on earth with its top reaching heaven, with messengers ascending and descending. This is vertical ordering: a hierarchy of purity with a top and a bottom, and movement along one axis.

The wrestle (Genesis 32). At the Jabbok, Jacob wrestles through the night with an unnamed figure, is struck on the hip, refuses to let go without a blessing, and is renamed Israel. This is lateral, bounded combat: two bodies holding each other until dawn, injury without killing, and a name as outcome.

The second image is the varanid clinch of The Dragon Scales in scriptural form. The ladder totalizes: every being gets a rung, and the gate is at the top. The clinch does not: the outcome is negotiated body to body and ends in a new identity for both parties to recognize. Draken's anti-totalization principle chooses the clinch.

§6 Husks and the Other Side

Lurianic Kabbalah (DRK-154) supplies the structure that the replacement gate needed. In the shattering of the vessels, Shevirat ha-Kelim, divine light was scattered, and sparks became trapped in kelipot, literally husks or shells. The realm constituted by these husks is the Sitra Achra, Aramaic for "the other side", the domain of impurity in the Zohar (Scholem 1941).

Read through §2, this is a doctrine of the classifier. The kelipah is a husk around a spark: the surface is judged, and the contents are not. The Sitra Achra is what the rejection gate produces when it is allowed to generalize: a single category, "the other side", into which the unclean, the foreign and the transgressive are all sorted.

Luria's own answer cuts against this. The task of tikkun is to recover the sparks from the husks, not to burn the husks. In sheaf terms, the obstruction is not deleted; the local sections trapped in the husk are glued back. The doctrine therefore contains its own correction: the other side holds light that belongs to the whole.

§7 Purity as a prosthetic gate

Mary Douglas (1966) defined dirt as matter out of place: impurity is a violation of a classificatory system, not an intrinsic property of the substance. Levitical purity law, with its lists of clean and unclean animals, emissions, diseases and mixtures, reads on this account as an explicit classifier written down.

Combining §0 and §7 gives the post's central claim:

Purity doctrine is a prosthetic restriction morphism: a narrative rebuilt where the chemical gate was cut.

The vomeronasal organ once answered is this other one of us, fit, safe to approach? at the molecular level. With that channel gone, the question was reassigned to a gate built for spoiled food and then formalized in text. The text has advantages the organ never had: it can be copied, taught and enforced at scale. It also has the defect of every narrative classifier: it can be written to mark anyone.

This is DRK-158's burnt section in another key. Where Josiah's reform suppressed H¹ by amputation, purity doctrine suppresses it by classification: the obstruction between self and other is not resolved but assigned to the other side.

§8 Sin as debt, absolution as reset

The Christian vocabulary of sin inherits both roots. Greek hamartia and Hebrew chet' both carry the sense of missing a mark. Latin sons, sontis, "guilty", is often connected by etymologists to the participle of esse, "being", so that the guilty one is "the one who it is"; this etymology is proposed, not settled.

In Draken terms, sin behaves like coherence debt K(t): unresolved mismatch between what an agent did and what its community's sections require, accumulating over time. Repair in the Hebrew tradition is relational and costly: restitution to the person harmed precedes atonement.

The institutional failure mode is absolution without repayment. The sale of indulgences, which Luther attacked in 1517, is the limit case: K(t) is set to zero by purchase from a third party, while the debt to the harmed party is untouched. This is source laundering (DRK-165) applied to debt. The ledger is cleared at the issuing institution, and the obstruction persists in the world. The predicted signature is rising Ψ: the institution's narrative about itself grows more self-referential as its claim to clear debt drifts further from any repayment.

§9 What still travels the old road

One biological fact ties this back to the song that preceded this post. During embryonic development, the neurons that will secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone, the master signal of human reproduction, originate in the olfactory placode and migrate into the brain along the olfactory and vomeronasal nerve route (Schwanzel-Fukuda & Pfaff 1989). When that migration fails, the result is Kallmann syndrome: loss of smell together with failure of puberty.

So the vomeronasal road is not empty in humans. The organ that judged the other is gone, but the neurons that make offspring possible still commute along its path before birth. The wire that classified was cut; the wire that continues life was kept.

§10 Synthesis

  1. Humans lost the vomeronasal gate to the other at the molecular level (§0).
  2. Its function was partly re-implemented by a rejection system built for food (§2), which generalizes to moral judgment with a weak and noisy index (§3).
  3. Abrahamic narrative encodes both the spoofing of chemical identity (Isaac's blessing) and two models of relation, the vertical ladder and the lateral clinch (§4–§5).
  4. Kabbalah names the classifier's output, kelipot and Sitra Achra, and prescribes recovery rather than destruction (§6).
  5. Purity doctrine is the prosthetic gate, and institutional absolution is debt laundering on top of it (§7–§8).
  6. The care operator V̇_exo = 0 is the constraint the prosthetic gate violates: a rejection reflex exported onto persons becomes harm. The Draken prescription is the clinch and tikkun: hold the other until dawn, and glue back the sparks.

§11 Falsification (DRK-131)

This post's claims fail under the following conditions:

  • Replicated VNO signalling. Independent replication of Monti-Bloch-type VNO responses, together with a traced neural projection from the human VNO, would reopen the vomeronasal route for §3's political gradient.
  • Functional human VNO. Demonstration of vomeronasal sensory neurons in adult humans with a projection to the brain would remove §0's premise and restore the original "same circuitry" hypothesis.
  • Disgust independent of the oral system. Evidence that moral disgust shares no mechanism with oral distaste, for example a failure to replicate the facial-muscle overlap reported by Chapman et al. (2009), would weaken §2 and §3.
  • Strong causal disgust effect. A preregistered, well-powered replication showing that incidental disgust substantially hardens moral judgment would strengthen §3 beyond what is claimed here; the current reading rests on Landy & Goodwin (2015).
  • Political gradient. If preregistered, well-powered replications find no association between disgust sensitivity (including BODS) and conservatism, authoritarianism or disapproval of sexual minorities, §3 fails.
  • Purity without disgust. A purity system whose classificatory content shows no overlap with pathogen-avoidance cues (food, bodily emissions, disease, corpses) would falsify the "prosthetic gate" reading in §7.
  • Absolution with repayment. If institutional absolution historically correlates with increased restitution to harmed parties rather than substituting for it, §8's laundering claim fails.

The textual readings in §4–§6 are interpretive mappings, not empirical claims, and are offered as structural homologies subject to the anti-totalization principle.
