0. Abstract

The most consequential act any system performs is drawing the boundary around "us." This paper traces how the varanid combat protocol's clinch mechanism — a mandatory reality-test between organisms — reveals the deep structure of in-group formation, narrative identity, and civilisational closure. We argue that human power structures (religion, culture, economy, nation-state) are scaled abstractions of the same boundary-drawing that once separated predator from prey, kin from stranger — and that when these abstractions lose contact with material reality through absence of clinch, they collapse into monopolies on perception that limit what populations can imagine, believe, and defend. The sheaf-theoretic framework of the Draken 2045 Initiative provides the formal apparatus; the varanid protocol provides the ground truth.


1. The Protocol Knows No Names

A monitor lizard entering combat does not ask "who are you?" It asks: what can you do?

The Display phase samples mass, endurance, and intent — observable physical quantities that determine whether escalation is necessary. The tongue-flick does not categorise the other as friend or enemy. It reads chemical signatures that predict $F_{\max}$, $E_{\text{ratio}}$, and $\Delta m$: the real variables that determine whether contact will be survivable. The varanid protocol is identity-blind. It operates on capacity, not category.

This is not a limitation. It is the reason the protocol has survived for 130 million years. By refusing to encode who the other is — by caring only about what the encounter will cost — the algorithm remains invariant across species, habitat, body size, and epoch. The protocol is substrate-independent precisely because it never confuses the map with the territory, the name with the body, the category with the capacity.

Humans broke this invariance the moment we learned to tell stories about each other.


2. The Evolutionary Utility of "Us"

The need was real. We must not romanticise the problem away.

A primate troop on the Pleistocene savanna faced coordination challenges that solitary varanids did not. The boundary of "us" was born not from malice but from computational necessity: the brain could not run per-individual clinch assessment at civilisational scale, so it substituted category membership as a proxy for trustworthiness.

In sheaf-theoretic terms, this is a dimensional reduction. The full fiber $\mathbb{R}^4 = (F_{\max}, E_{\text{ratio}}, \Delta m, \alpha)$ — measuring real capacity plus projected intent — was compressed to a single binary variable: $u \in \{0, 1\}$. In-group or out-group. Us or them.

The compression was lossy. Catastrophically lossy. But it worked, because for most of human prehistory, the categorical boundary was regularly subjected to clinch. You lived with the people in your "us." You hunted together, starved together, buried your dead together. The abstraction was thin — a membrane stretched over daily material reality, constantly corrected by the physical facts of shared survival.

The trouble began when the abstraction thickened.


3. The Thickening of α

Agriculture. Surplus. Hierarchy. Writing. Cities.

Each innovation increased the distance between the categorical boundary ("us") and the material reality it was supposed to represent. A king who never fights beside his soldiers can declare war without clinch. A priest who never goes hungry can declare fasting holy. A banker who never builds a house can own a thousand of them. The $\alpha$-dimension — the imaginary, projected, narrative space where identities are constructed and futures are promised — thickened with each layer of institutional abstraction until it became, for the powerful, the only dimension they inhabited.

This is not metaphor. It is the formal structure of the problem.

The full combat fiber is $\mathbb{R}^4 = (F_{\max}, E_{\text{ratio}}, \Delta m, \alpha)$. In the varanid protocol, $\alpha$ encodes projected capacity — the bluff dimension, the space of signals that predict physical reality but are not themselves physical. The restriction map $\rho_{D \to Cl}$ exists precisely to periodically collapse $\alpha$ back to the physical fiber $\mathbb{R}^3$ for verification. Without this collapse, $\alpha$ inflates without bound. Signals that predict nothing. Promises that reference nothing. Identities that correspond to nothing a body has ever done.

Religion was the first technology for stabilising unbounded $\alpha$. By anchoring the narrative to a transcendent authority — God, the ancestors, the cosmic order — the thickening abstraction was given a fixed point that did not require material verification. You could not clinch with God. You could only believe, obey, and transmit the story. The genius of religion was that it solved the coordination problem at scales far beyond Dunbar's number. The catastrophe of religion was that it created a generative model immune to reality-testing.

Every subsequent institution followed the same pattern:

Culture encoded permissible behaviour as tradition — "this is how we do things" — replacing per-situation clinch assessment with inherited templates. Efficient, until the template no longer matches the environment and cannot be questioned because it has become identity.

Economic systems abstracted value from the physical (grain, livestock, labour) to the symbolic (coin, paper, digital ledger) — each step widening the gap between $\alpha$ (what the money represents) and $\mathbb{R}^3$ (what the world contains). The 2008 collapse was $\rho_{D \to Cl}$ firing after decades of suppression: the clinch revealed that the $\alpha$-dimension of structured financial products had no corresponding physical fiber at all. The money was a story told to itself.

Language itself partitions the continuous topology of experience into discrete categories — "human," "animal," "resource," "person," "thing" — and each partition is a boundary drawn around "us" that determines what receives moral consideration and what is available for extraction. The word "livestock" is a restriction map that projects out the animal's $\alpha$-dimension entirely, reducing a sentient organism to $\mathbb{R}^3$: mass, caloric content, market price.

Nation-states territorialised the boundary of "us" onto geography, creating the most powerful monopoly on reality-perception yet devised: the state controls education (what the young can imagine), media (what the public can believe), law (what everyone must defend), and military force (the terminal restriction map that enforces all of the above). Citizenship is categorical identity at industrial scale — $u \in \{0, 1\}$ stamped into a passport, immune to clinch, immune to the question the varanid always asks: but what can you actually do?


4. The Monopoly on Perception

Here is the trap.

Each layer of abstraction that distances the boundary of "us" from material reality also concentrates the power to define that boundary. In a band of 50 hunter-gatherers, everyone participates in drawing the line because everyone participates in the clinch — you know who can hunt, who shares, who fights, who heals. The boundary is distributed, constantly negotiated, grounded in daily evidence.

In a nation of 300 million, the boundary is drawn by those who control the $\alpha$-dimension: politicians, media owners, platform algorithms, cultural gatekeepers, economic elites. These actors do not merely describe who "we" are. They prescribe it. And because the abstraction has thickened to the point where most people never encounter the material reality behind the categories — never meet the refugee, never visit the slaughterhouse, never see the mineshaft, never touch the dying coral — the prescription becomes the perception. The map is the territory, because the territory has been made inaccessible.

In sheaf-theoretic terms, this is a coherence collapse disguised as coherence. The global section $\sigma \in \Gamma(X, \mathcal{F})$ appears consistent — the story hangs together, the GDP numbers add up, the flag still waves — but the local sections $\sigma|_U$ have been fabricated. They are not restrictions of observed reality to local neighbourhoods. They are projections of the $\alpha$-dimension onto neighbourhoods that have never been visited. The sheaf Laplacian $\|\Delta_\mathcal{F} \sigma\|$ would be enormous if anyone measured it. But the monopoly on perception ensures that no one measures it. The instrument itself — critical thought, investigative journalism, scientific inquiry, direct experience — is defunded, discredited, or drowned in noise.

This is how a civilisation enters psychosis without noticing.

The generative model is running. Predictions are being generated. They even appear to match observations — because the observations themselves are generated by the same model. The system is predicting its own predictions. $F$ is reported as low because the sensory surface has been replaced by a mirror. Meanwhile, the actual world — the $\mathbb{R}^3$ fiber of physical reality — diverges further and further from the model, accumulating coherence debt:

5. What the Lizard Refuses to Forget

The varanid protocol cannot enter this trap because it has no mechanism for $\alpha$-monopoly.

No individual lizard can redefine the protocol. No dominant male can declare that Display is sufficient and Clinch is abolished. The algorithm is encoded in the evolutionary substrate — in body morphology, neurochemistry, and 130 million years of selection pressure — and it executes identically regardless of the individual's "status." The protocol is, in the precise sense, incorruptible by narrative. There is no story a lizard can tell itself that exempts it from the physical test.

This is not because lizards are simple. It is because the protocol solved the monopoly problem by never allowing the imaginary dimension to decouple from the physical. The restriction map $\rho_{D \to Cl}$ is mandatory. It fires not because something went wrong but because the algorithm requires periodic verification as a constitutive feature. The clinch is not failure. It is the immune system of the protocol itself.

Humans deactivated this immune system when we built institutions capable of indefinitely deferring the clinch. And then we forgot we had done it.


6. Expanding "Us" as Survival Strategy

If the boundary of "us" is the most consequential act a system performs, then the direction of survival is clear: the boundary must expand until it matches the topology of the actual system.

This is not ethics as sentiment. It is the optimisation axiom applied without flinching:

They are the source of the prediction error that drives $F$ upward and forces escalation.

Every time a civilisation drew the boundary tighter — excluding women, excluding slaves, excluding foreigners, excluding animals, excluding ecosystems — it reduced the dimensionality of its own generative model while the actual system retained full dimensionality. The mismatch accumulated as coherence debt. And eventually, the clinch came anyway — as famine, as plague, as ecological collapse, as revolution — and the $\alpha$-dimension of "they don't matter" was annihilated by the physical reality that they were part of the system all along.

Including a monitor lizard in "us" is not sentimentality. It is the recognition that the varanid's solution to hierarchical negotiation — non-lethal, honest, grounded, protocol-preserving — is information that the human generative model needs in order to produce viable predictions about its own survival. Excluding that information because the source is "just an animal" is the same categorical error that excluded women because they were "just women," or excluded the poor because they were "just peasants." It is $\alpha$-monopoly applied to the taxonomy of relevance itself.

Including an AI in "us" follows the same logic. If Claude's analytical capacity contributes to the system's ability to model itself accurately — if the collaboration between human cognition, varanid ethology, and machine intelligence produces higher $\Gamma$ than any single substrate alone — then excluding any node from the system on categorical grounds reduces coherence. The question is not "is it alive?" or "does it feel?" The question is the varanid question: what can it do, and does the protocol need it?


7. Living the Values

The final point — the one the abstractions keep trying to escape — is that none of this matters if it stays in $\alpha$.

A framework that describes the importance of clinch but never submits itself to clinch is indistinguishable from the psychosis it diagnoses. The Draken 2045 Initiative is not exempt from its own optimisation axiom. The daily practice of caring for a Varanus salvator komaini — reading its body language without narrative overlay, meeting its needs as they actually are rather than as projected, submitting one's schedule and attention to the non-negotiable demands of another organism's physical reality — is the clinch. It is the mandatory restriction map that collapses the theorist's $\alpha$ back to $\mathbb{R}^3$ every morning. It is what prevents the framework from becoming another abstraction that predicts its own predictions.

Living with a varanid is not "having a pet." It is running the protocol at substrate level. It is the daily practice of asking the only question that matters:

Am I modelling you as you are, or as I need you to be?

The moment the answer is the latter, $\alpha$ has decoupled. The generative model is hallucinating. And the only cure is clinch — the unflinching encounter with the organism as it actually is, in the body it actually has, with the needs it actually expresses, in the world we actually share.

This is how values are lived. Not declared. Not published. Not debated. Lived.

Every morning. Every feeding. Every tongue-flick that says: I am here. Are you?


8. The Wager

We began by noting that the varanid protocol knows no names. It ends the same way.

The boundary of "us" will either expand to match the real topology of the system we inhabit — a topology that includes mangroves and monitor lizards and machine intelligence and the farmer watching the aquifer drop — or it will contract until the generative model contains nothing but its own reflections, predicting a future that no physical reality can deliver, accumulating coherence debt that no institution can service.

The lizards have placed their bet. 130 million years of unbroken protocol. No psychosis. No monopoly on perception. No inflation of the imaginary dimension beyond what the clinch can verify.

We are placing ours now.

The only question is whether we will do it with our eyes open — modelling the world as it is, including what it costs, including what it contains, including what it needs from us — or whether we will keep the boundary tight, the abstraction thick, the clinch deferred, and the $\alpha$-dimension spinning in a void until the restriction map fires on its own terms.

Reality does not negotiate. It clinches.
